MCC SPAN display, movie March 17-18

The following press release was received from the MCC Student Peace Action Network:

MCC’S STUDENT PEACE GROUP SCHEDULES EYES WIDE OPEN EXHIBIT AND AFGHANISTAN MOVIE SCREENING

[Mar. 15, 2010. Crystal Lake, IL] The McHenry County College Student Peace Action Network (SPAN) will host the Eyes Wide Open display provided by the American Friends Service Committee March 17th and 18th in the commons at McHenry County College 10:00am-2:00pm. Eyes Wide Open is a static display which symbolizes the human cost of war using combat boots to represent the lives of Illinois casualties in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

In conjunction, SPAN will also feature a movie screening of Rethink Afghanistan, March 18th at 7:00pm in Room B177c, the Faculty Dining Room. Rethink Afghanistan is a ground-breaking, full-length documentary focusing on the key issues surrounding the Afghanistan War. Directed by Robert Greenwald the film features experts from Afghanistan, the U.S., and Russia among others discussing critical issues like military escalation, how escalation will affect Pakistan and the surrounding region, the cost of war, civilian casualties, and the rights of Afghan women.

With March 20th marking the 7th year of the Iraq War, SPAN believes it to be important to memorialize our fallen soldiers giving these men and women names instead of just a number. SPAN’s stance is still that the troops in Iraq should be brought home rather than sent into Afghanistan.

SPAN is made up of students promoting peace nationally and locally through action and education. The events are co-sponsored by Pax Christi and the McHenry County Peace Coalition. The events are free and open to the public.

The college is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14, Crystal Lake. For more information, contact the MCC Student Activities Office at (815) 455-8772.
