Murder-for-hire arrest

No, not the one you are waiting for.

Today the sheriff's department's favorite newspaper and its favorite reporter have the story about a murder-for-hire and arrest yesterday (August 4) of an Algonquin lawyer, Jason W. Smiekel. Yet there is no press release on the sheriff's website, where all reporters can get at it. Gee, how does something like that happen?

Duhhhh......

I'll bet Smiekel's girlfriend's husband is much relaxed right now. After all, "officials" said, "... the intended victim was never in harm's way."

Where do they get that stuff, anyway? Of course, the victim was in harm's way. Ever since Smiekel allegedly decided to rub him out. Let's see, now; what "information" could he have had? Duh...... A lawyer has a girlfriend whom he had represented in her divorce?

Big mistake trying to hire a BATFE agent to rub someone out; right? But what is Smiekel was running a sting to see who would take the bait?

Anyone happen to know any other lawyer who has a girlfriend whom he had represented in her divorce?

(NOTE: The McHenry County Sheriff's Department was not involved in this case. The initial article in the Northwest Herald mentioned only that an attempt was made to hire an undercover BATFE agent to commit a crime. It did not say that it was a BATFE operation. I made an incorrect assumption that it was a McHenry County crime, since the story was reported by the reporter who handles McHenry County Courthouse trials and hearings. I apologize to readers for the error in my assumption.)

Gus, I am guessing as these were federal charges made by a federal agency and the arrest wasn't even in Mchenry County you may not see a McHenry County Sheriff's release announcing it.

Yes, sure looks like it's a Fed case. The expanding story in the Northwest Herald mentions the Feds now. Thanks.

Hey, even tho' I jumped the gun (no pun intended) and thought the McHenry County Sheriff's Department might have been involved, since the initial story in the Northwest Herald only mentioned "Algonquin lawyer", I'll leave the poke up for your reading enjoyment.

There's a reason, but I won't mention it.

Be sure to visit www.mchenrycountyblog.com and read the statement of the BATFE Special Agent.

Sorry Gus...I did not take into account that you may have posted with an earlier version before details had been updated. It's happened to me before too.

Having read everything in the NWH I fail to see what would make one believe it was the Sheriff that would release a press statement. Everything says Federal on this thing. The guy would not even be in the local jail. He'd be in the Federal lockup downtown.

Thanks for your comment, Med. "Everything" in the Northwest Herald is greatly expanded from the first short article about the arrest.
